Dog Kennel and Run Basics
A secure, comfortable spot for the working dog or family pet.
1. Size
The kennel should let the dog stand, turn around and lie stretched out. The run should give room to move, not just stand.
2. Shelter and shade
Out of the prevailing wind, raised off damp ground, with shade all day in summer and water that can't be tipped over.
3. Fencing
- Height to suit the dog. Some dogs jump or climb.
- Dig-proof base: bury mesh or lay an apron for diggers.
- A self-closing, latching gate.
4. Clean and dry
A sloped concrete or gravel floor that drains makes cleaning easy.
5. Rules
Check your state's animal welfare code and your council's rules for dogs on rural land.
General information only. Check the maker's instructions, and ask your council about approvals.
