Solar Water Pump Basics for Bores, Dams and Tanks
Pump water with the sun, store it in a tank, and use it any time.
A solar pump runs straight from solar panels during daylight. It's usually used to lift water into a header tank, which then supplies troughs or the house by gravity or a pressure pump.
1. The numbers to know
- Water per day you need, in litres.
- Total head: the height from the water level to the outlet, plus pipe friction.
- Sun hours where you are, worst month.
2. Pump into storage
Because the pump only runs in sun, store at least a few days of water in the tank so cloudy days don't leave stock dry.
3. Bores
Bore pumps must suit the bore diameter and depth, and the bore's safe yield. Pumping a bore faster than it refills can damage the pump. Ask the bore driller or a pump supplier.
4. Electrical work
Low-voltage DC pump kits are often DIY. Any 240V pump wiring or connection to mains must be done by a licensed electrician.
5. Quick summary
- Sun pumps into a tank, the tank supplies on demand.
- Size for daily litres, total head and winter sun.
- Get advice for bores.
