How Much Mulch and Soil Do I Need?
Order the right amount the first time.
1. The sum
Area (m²) × depth (m) = cubic metres. 75 mm deep is 0.075 m.
2. Typical depths
- Mulch on garden beds: often 50 to 100 mm.
- Topdressing a lawn: a thin layer only.
- New garden bed soil: depends on the bed.
3. Allow for settling
Soil and mulch settle. Add around 10 to 20% to your order.
4. Ordering
Landscape yards sell by the cubic metre. A trailer or ute may only carry part of a cubic metre: check its rated load, because wet soil is heavy.
5. Keep mulch off stems
Keep mulch a little away from plant stems and tree trunks, and away from the house walls and timber.
6. Work it out
Use the Mulch and Soil Volume Calculator.
