Fencing Materials Calculator
Enter each side of your fence and get a shopping list of posts, strainers, stays and wire.
This gives a materials estimate only for a plain wire, barbed wire or mesh fence on steel or timber posts. Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
1. Fence sides
Add each straight side of the fence. A corner, the end of a line, and a long straight run all need strainer posts with stays.
2. Layout
These defaults are common starting points, not rules. Use your own plan or local practice.
Each gate gets two strainer posts, one each side.
The opening for each gate.
Distance between line posts such as star pickets.
An extra strainer goes in when a side is longer than this. Check the wire maker's guide.
3. Wire and mesh
Wire and mesh come in many roll lengths, so check the label.
Number of single wires along the fence (0 if mesh only).
Check the roll label.

Extra for wrapping strainers, joins and offcuts.

How it was worked out
Before you rely on it
- This is a materials estimate only. Hills, gullies, soft ground and creek crossings need extra posts and strainers, so walk the line before you buy.
- Gate openings aren't taken off the line post count, so you may have one or two posts spare.
- Strainer assemblies, stay lengths, post depth and wire tension should follow the wire and post makers' instructions or your local practice.
- Call Before You Dig Australia (1100.com.au) before driving posts or digging holes, and check boundary fence rules with your council or state.
